Rizzoli International
Three cookbooks go from staid to saucy.
Rizzoli International recently asked us to art direct the first English translation of La Cucina, the de facto bible of authentic Italian cooking. On the heels of the book’s strong sales, the publisher launched a series of cookbooks bound by the same culinary mission: to discover and document regional recipes from around the world. If you ask us, La Cucina’s success can be chalked up to its impeccable design—and judging by Rizzoli’s decision to hire us again for the next two books in the series, we might be on to something.
La Cucina
The first of Rizzoli’s three culinary bibles is an unprecedented collection of over 2,000 family recipes handpicked from every region of Italy. For the cover and interior, we conceived a traditional treatment and added a generous pinch of personality for good measure. The result is a lively testament to the Italian passion for cooking handed down from generation to generation.
La Cuisine
La Cuisine is Rizzoli’s second compendium of recipes, this time from the beloved matriarch of modern French cuisine Françoise Bernard. Following La Cucina’s example, we created a cover that celebrates the joie de vivre of simple, old-fashioned French home cooking—the kind your grande-mère used to make.
The Great American Cookbook
In the 1930s, American food journalist Clementine Paddleford whisked across the nation in her propeller plane, touching down wherever local cooks were willing to disclose their secret recipes and the stories behind them. We channelled the author’s adventurous spirit in our design of The Great American Cookbook, presenting it as equal parts cookbook and folklore for foodies.
